BACKGROUND
Jubail is the largest purpose-built industrial city in the Middle East, with the world’s 4th largest petrochemical company based here. Jubail City was a small fishing village until 1975, when the government of Saudi Arabia designated the area as the site for a new industrial city, leading to rapid expansion and industrialization.
Sadara is considered the world’s largest Petrochemical Complex project in the world today, and is expected to need about 6,000 cubic meters per hour of desalinated water for cooling purposes.
To meet this demand, Marafiq, Saudi Arabia’s leading water and electricity services operator, has contracted Sidem - a subsidiary of Veolia Water - to design, build and operate the largest ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis desalination plant to produce water for the Sadara Chemical Complex.
